My teaching philosophy is based on establishing a culture of safety and mutual respect. It is important to me that I cultivate a communal space that is open to creative discovery of movement and of self. I promote the notion that we are life-long investigators in the creative process but also in life. Dance is an opportunity to heal and transform together. Furthermore, we explore how to connect deeper, have more personal kinesthetic awareness through isolations and polyrhythm but also a level of humanness. I like to offer my knowledge and past experiences of my own journey to the students while also providing space for their own journey to develop. I believe it's important that a dancer not only knows how to move their body but understands the biomechanics of their body and how to take care of it properly. Thus yoga hugely influences my warm ups and cool downs. It is important to me that they understand holistically how to care for their mind, body and spirit. Thus I like to provide resources and videos for self development. I also believe it is the role of the teacher to awaken the senses, provoke thought, question assumptions, and disrupt the status quo. I find it essential to consider the manner, methods, and mission of education and to create a better world through teaching. I approach teaching from the assumption that student empowerment is the key to a better future. Therefore it is essential that I teach my students to be socially conscious, resourceful, intellectually curious and thoughtful people in the world. It is very important to me to build positive relationships with my students. I develop authentic rapport with my classes to foster the confidence and trust that I believe is essential for honest, creative exploration and successful student learning. By getting to know my students on this level I am able to effectively personalize my instructional style and differentiate within my lesson plans to meet the individual needs of each of my students, and in turn, unlock their academic and artistic potential.
